Departing from Athens International Airport

Flying out of Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (ATH) is straightforward once you know the sequence. Departures are handled on the upper level of the single Main Terminal, so there is no inter-terminal confusion — check-in, security and the gates all flow logically from one hall. Here is exactly what to expect and how to arrive in good time.

When to Arrive at the Airport

As a rule of thumb, allow 2 hours before a Schengen or European flight and 3 hours before an intercontinental departure. Athens can build queues at security during morning and evening peaks, so the extra margin is worth it — especially in summer.

Check-in and Bag Drop

Check-in desks are arranged in islands across the Departures level, grouped by airline. Most carriers — including Aegean, the airport's largest operator — offer online or mobile check-in, which lets you skip straight to bag drop or, with hand luggage only, straight to security. Check your airline's desk on the information screens, and note the bag-drop cut-off (typically 40–60 minutes before departure).

Security and Passport Control

After check-in you pass through security screening. From there the route splits:

Intra-Schengen departures proceed directly to their gates — no passport check is required within the Schengen Area.

Extra-Schengen (non-Schengen) departures pass through passport control before reaching the gate area. Allow a few extra minutes here during busy periods.

The Departure Gates

The Main Terminal's gates are split between the intra-Schengen and extra-Schengen areas. Some long-haul and peak-time flights board from the adjacent Satellite Terminal, reached from the Main Terminal via an underground passage with moving walkways — factor in a few minutes' walk if your gate is there. Watch the screens for gate numbers, which can change late. For a full layout, see our Athens airport terminals guide.

Lounges, Duty-Free and Services

Once airside, the Departures level offers duty-free shopping, a wide range of cafés and restaurants, pharmacies, currency exchange and ATMs. Several lounges are available, including the Aegean/Star Alliance lounge and independent options open to eligible passengers and lounge-pass holders. There is ample seating and free Wi-Fi throughout.

Getting to the Airport for Your Flight

All the main options drop you within a short walk of Departures:

Train and metro. The airport railway station sits right on the Departures level. Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) runs from central Athens for a €9 ticket; the suburban railway (Proastiakos) serves Larissis station and Piraeus port — ideal if you're arriving from outside the centre.

Taxi. Fixed-fare zones make a taxi to the airport simple and predictable, including late at night when trains don't run.

Bus. Express airport buses connect the city and Piraeus around the clock — see the airport bus and shuttle page.

Driving and drop-off. If someone is dropping you, the Short-Term P1/P2 car park offers a free 20-minute window, and valet parking is available at Departures near Entrance 4. Rates and pre-booking on the Athens airport parking page.

Departure Day Tips

Check your gate and terminal the night before, and again on the screens once airside. Have your boarding pass and passport ready before security. Leaving early or late? Confirm the first/last train, or plan a taxi. With one terminal, a clear check-in-security-gate flow and rail right at the door, departing from Athens Airport is refreshingly painless when you give yourself enough time.
