Athens Airport Suburban Railway (Proastiakos)

The Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) connects Athens International Airport (El. Venizelos) with the city center, Larissis Station, and Piraeus Port. The direct line Athens Airport – Koropi – Athens – Piraeus provides a fast and convenient way to reach central Athens in just 44 minutes. Trains are modern, air-conditioned, and comfortable — ideal for both travelers heading to the city and those connecting to regional destinations across Greece.

Available Routes from Athens Airport

  • Athens City Center: Direct connection to Larissis Station, the main train station in Athens.
  • Piraeus Port: Take Line A1 from the airport via Larissis Station for a direct link to Greece’s largest port — ideal for ferry departures to the islands.
  • Other Greek Cities & the Balkans: From Larissis Station, connections are available to all major Greek cities and international destinations in the Balkans.
  • Ano Liosia: Accessible via Line A2 from Athens Airport.
  • Kiato & Chalkida: From Kato Acharnai Station, transfer to Line A4 toward Kiato. From Agioi Anargyroi Station, transfer to Line A3 to Chalkida.
  • Metro Network: Disembark at Doukissis Plakentias Station to switch to the Athens Metro (Line 3). The same ticket remains valid for up to 90 minutes.

Tip: The suburban railway is fully integrated with Athens’ public transport system, meaning you can continue your journey by metro, bus, or tram using the same ticket within the 90-minute limit.

  • Reduced fare: €4.50 (students, seniors 65+, children 6–18)
  • Children under 6: Free travel

Tickets can be purchased at automatic vending machines or ticket counters located at the airport railway station. The same ticket can also be used for a metro transfer within a 90-minute window.

Tip: If you plan to use Athens public transport frequently, consider purchasing the 3-day Tourist Ticket (€20). It covers all metro, tram, and bus rides, including a round trip to and from the airport.

Schedule

Proastiakos trains run hourly from 06:07 am to 11:07 pm. The journey to Larissis Station takes about 44 minutes, to Doukissis Plakentias Station around 16 minutes, and to Piraeus Port approximately 60 minutes.

Athens Airport Train Station Location

The railway station is located on the Departures Level of the main terminal, connected via a pedestrian overpass. Simply follow the “Trains” signs from the Arrivals Hall — walking time is approximately 3–5 minutes.

Tip: Elevators are available for passengers with heavy luggage, but using a luggage cart or light packing is recommended for easier access to the platform.
